What is Grief?

Grief is a natural human response to loss of any kind. Anger, sadness, frustration, and depression are all common effects of grief.

Grieving a loss takes time and patience. Rushing the process can make it worse in the long run, as the individual can experience adverse effects arising from unresolved emotions. For the Christian, grief is a journey that he/she can take with God's help.

Prayer for Grieving a Death

Losing a loved one is painful. The constant reminders of that person, the places and memories left behind, and the hole of that person's absence all add stress to those in grief. The following prayer asks God to be present and active while a loved one or family grieves a death:

"God of power, You watched as Your Son Jesus died on the cross. I watched as [insert loved one's name] left this world, too. Be with me and [insert other loved ones who are grieving the loss] as we journey on together without [insert lost loved one]. Comfort us as we mourn, and help us to remember that we are not alone, in each other and in You. Grant us the light of Your love in the darkness of grief. Amen."

This prayer might be offered by friends concerned over another family's loss or on behalf of another by changing the pronouns of the prayer.

Blessing for Healing from Loss

Healing after any loss takes time. Losing financial security, a home, a family member, or developing a serious illness such as cancer all require changes and loses. The following prayer provides Christians with a method to ask God to bless and heal those grieving from any loss, that they may find wholeness in the midst of their pain:

"God, You wept as Lazarus was laid into the tomb, yet You also gave him new life. Grant me new life, too, as I journey through [insert loss, such as cancer diagnosis or loss of spouse here]. Hold my hand no matter how rocky the path, and remind me, no matter how badly I feel, that I am Your beloved child, with whom You are well pleased. Heal me in body, mind, and spirit, and make me whole again in You. Amen."

This prayer might be offered by a grieving individual or on behalf of him/her by concerned family or friends. A laying on of hands from friends or family could accompany this prayer so that the grieving person feels especially supported by others and God in his or her grief.

Prayers for Tears

Crying is difficult for many people, particularly men. There is a stigma around crying, as though a person who cries is weaker than others. In reality, crying is a natural way to express grief and hurt and often leaves the grieving individual feeling better. The following prayer asks God to grant tears, that healing over a loss may continue:

"Jesus wept at the tomb of his friend. Let me, also, Lord, share my grief with you. Release the tension bottling up inside me, and grant me freedom from pain and new life in healing with each tear I shed. Each teardrop of pain is precious in Your sight, O Lord. I offer my tears in honor of [insert specific loss if desired] and for love of You. Bless all who mourn, that they be comforted. Amen."

This prayer might be offered for an individual struggling to grief a loss or for an individual who experiences difficulty in grieving a loss. One may offer this prayer, also, for a grieving individual who feels guilty or weak over his or her tears.

Thanksgiving for New Life in the
Midst of Grief

Grieving a loss takes time, but there may be joys along the way, such as a remission of cancer, a new relationship, and healing within a grieving family. The following prayer thanks God for new life in the midst of grief:

"God of power and might, thank you for [insert joys or thanksgivings] in the midst of grief over [insert loss here]. We rejoice that You continue to be with us and let the light of Your love shine on us, that we may be healed. Bless and keep us as we continue to seek new life through grief, now and always. Amen."

This prayer might be offered by others on behalf of a grieving individual who experiences joy or for the self in a private devotional setting.

Grief takes time and energy as an individual heals from a loss. With prayer, the Christian can invite God on the journey through grief to wholeness and rely on God's power and presence to heal, guard, and bless all who mourn.
